Welcome to the Association of Breast Surgery
The Association of Breast Surgery (ABS) is the association representing healthcare professionals treating malignant and benign breast disease in the UK, Ireland and worldwide. It focuses on education, audit and guidelines to enhance the treatment of patients with breast disease.
The ABS, originally part of the British Association of Surgical Oncology (BASO), was established in its own right in 2010.
In 1995 the BASO Breast Group was formed and was chaired by Roger Blamey. Its membership originally consisted of general surgeons, who specialised in the treatment of breast cancer.
In 2002 the BASO Breast Group changed its name to the Association of Breast Surgery at BASO. Its status as a branch of BASO ~ ACS was confirmed in the same year. The membership of the ABS at BASO was extended at this time to cover all members of the multidisciplinary team.
The specialty of breast surgery has grown from strength to strength since the inception of the first specialist breast surgery group in 1995. The Association of Breast Surgery, with over 1400 multidisciplinary members, is a growing and vibrant charitable organisation, dedicated to improving the standard of breast care and surgery for anyone (male or female) with a breast problem, ranging from simple breast issues through to more complex breast cancer treatment, surgery and breast reconstruction.
We actively promote our charitable aims through innovative specialist breast education and training for all our members, disseminating best practice through the development of guidelines, consensus practice statements and conferences. ABS works closely with the Department of Health and many other national bodies to support and develop outcome focused audits to ensure equitable delivery of high standard care throughout the UK. In addition we have just funded our first novel research projects.
ABS collaborates with all other disciplines involved in the management of breast problems to maintain and constantly improve what are universally acknowledged as the highest standards of breast care and surgery in the world. The rapidly declining UK breast cancer mortality rates and improved access to breast reconstruction are testament to this vision and collaboration.
ABS continues to build on our European, Indian, Australasian and US links to share our vision and raise the standards of all aspects of breast care for every breast patient worldwide.
ABS is the voice of breast care and surgery. We always welcome your suggestions and thoughts.
