Breast Ultrasound Workshop for International Surgical Trainees

Workshop to be held in Luton in June

Date & time: Saturday 15th June 2024, 09.00-15.30

Venue: Breast Screening Unit, Luton and Dunstable University Hospital, Lewsey Rd, Luton, LU4 0DZ

The workshop is aimed at breast surgical trainees from LMICs who are interested in introducing ultrasound into their day to day practice. It gives an opportunity to gain hands on experience in the use of standard ultrasound equipment and the Clarius probe, a portable device connecting to a mobile phone. Portable ultrasound devices are particularly suited to breast assessment in LMICs. The workshop will include stations on standard ultrasound examination of the breast and axilla using a live model and ultrasound guided cyst aspiration and core biopsy using simulators. Introductory lectures will give an overview of the value of breast ultrasound in surgical practice and include:-

·         Breast  ultrasound – the surgeon's perspective

·         Breast Ultrasound – the radiologists perspective. Tips for core biopsy and FNA

The Luton Breast Unit has been very successful in developing ultrasound skills for surgeons in the context of close collaboration between surgical and radiology colleagues. The Luton Breast Ultrasound Course for International Trainees held in June 2022 received excellent feedback with the majority of attendees planning to integrate ultrasound skills into their practice. Please note that this course provides an over view of the applications of breast ultrasound in surgical practice. Formal accreditation is required to practice breast ultrasound independently.

If you are a UK trainee and would like to attend, please register your interest. Priority will be given to trainees on International fellowships but we will contact you if there are any available places.

The workshop fee will be £100.
